Carnwath Park Damage Update

Update: July 1, 2010

Town of Wappinger Carnwath Park remains inaccessible due to the necessity to replace the electrical system, which was installed in 1929.  The Town, in accordance with NYS Law, recently issued bid notices to replace the electrical service to the site.

Carnwath Park is located on Wheeler Hill Road and is 99 acres overlooking the Hudson River, purchased nearly 10 years ago as a Town of Wappinger park.

Unfortunately, the severe storm of February caused damages to the electrical service within the confines of the park. While insurance did cover part of the damages, the greater expense and effort is in relation to the upgrade of the system. The original electrical system was installed in 1929 and simple re-connection repairs are not possible.

The Town is undertaking a replacement of the service lines, which is almost 2000 feet long, and requires three #2 primary wires just to reach the closest buildings. The current proposal is a replacement by underground service to enhance the beauty of the site and mitigate future occurrences of fallen lines from heavy snow. Unlike a homeowner or private business, a municipality is required to develop repair specifications and go to formal bidding for all phases of the project in accordance with NYS Law.

Thanks to the Town of Wappinger Highway Department who will be doing the trenching work.

As the site is served by an electrically driven water pump, which not only services the facilities, it also provides water for the fire suppression system. For this reason, Carnwath is closed until the electrical repairs are made as a simple sticking toilet or running sink could drain the fire protection system.

We apologize for the inconvenience of the process and the limitation on the use of the park.
